Are My Goals SMART Enough?

In my last posting I said that I was just brainstorming some goals; some may agree that I was brainstorming but how were my goals. Look at the first one, “Turn things around at work”. It is a little too vague to be useful.

To be effective a goal should be SMART; that is

Specific – Measurable – Attainable – Realistic -- Timely

Take a look at a couple of the following sites about creating goals

and there are a ton more.

So “Turn things around at word” should be revised as:

  • Be promoted to Manager of Development & Quality Assurance within the next six months.
  • In the next six months, resolve 50 issues, each within 3 days of the issue being reported. Accomplish this by keeping current on what issues are being reported and effectively managing my time and department resources.

  • SMART goals are definately the way to go when goal setting. It was the one thing that was really hammered in during my Marketing classes in High School. The hardest part, it seems for me, is making sure they are Attainable. Can actually make a million dollars in 12 years? I think so!
